Although Apocalypse Lovers is a sandbox game that’s still, in its early stages of development it has truly captivated me. I am so fascinated, by it that I’ve become a follower eagerly awaiting each update or even the release of a full chapter. In my opinion this game exhibits potential. I wanted to share my experiences thus far in the hopes of encouraging some of you to give it a try.

The Last of Us Apocalypse Lovers

As, for the story of Apocalypse Lovers it revolves around an apocalypse as the title suggests. It seems obvious to me that the game developer drew inspiration from the game The Last of Us given the fungal type apocalypse depicted here with plants reclaiming the Earth. Alternatively they might have been influenced by the movie, The Happening, by M. Night Shyamalan; but personally I believe The Last of Us had a bigger impact. Overall the storyline remains consistent. I’m really enjoying where its heading.

She Said Her Name Was Deborah!

That’s a nod, to the pop rock band Pulp. If you caught that reference I must say I’m impressed. So in the story Apocalypse Lovers we find ourselves as the character taking care of a girl named Jessica in a basement. Jessica is in need of our assistance. Of providing her with food and care we often end up giving her alcohol and going out to find new outfits for her. The twist in the story comes with another girl named Deborah who seems to have intentions, towards our “heroic” main character.

A Glimmer Of Light In The Dark

I’m really, into apocalyptic world settings and I have to say that this place is quite somber grimy and a bit unpleasant to look at. The two women have appearances. Jessica appears all dirty. Adorned with tattoos giving off a somewhat provocative vibe. On the hand Deborah has a unique” look that I’ll let you decide whether you find it appealing or not. The only problem I have with the presentation is that some scenes are incredibly dark! Especially the ones, in the basement area; with my brightness turned all the way up it was still dim. I understand that its meant to enhance the mood and atmosphere. They may have taken it a bit far.

Walking The Right Path Apocalypse Lovers

Listen I won’t delve deep into the specifics of how Apocalypse Lovers plays because as I write this there isn’t a lot, to the game. On the surface it may appear to be a risqué novel. Theres actually more complexity involved (based on my understanding) compared to your typical risqué visual novel. We’re talking about managing resources making decisions utilizing items engaging in mini games and so forth. Most of what the game has to offer can be experienced in your playthroughs. However it left quite an impression, on me. Whats even better is that despite being an ” access” game I didn’t encounter any technical issues throughout my playtime.

I understand that Apocalypse Lovers is still, in its stages of development but for a release I must say the developer has done an impressive job. Personally I find the story intriguing, particularly when it comes to Deborah and her true nature. The games visual style is quite appealing. What sets it apart is that there’s more to the gameplay than making a few narrative choices here and there. It’s soon for me to assign a score to it since its still early, in its development. I highly recommend giving it a try!

Pros

The two female characters are incredibly fascinating.
I’m really drawn to the apocalyptic backdrop of the narrative.
It gives me a feel, to “The Last of Us ” which I find appealing.
The gameplay goes beyond what you find in an adult visual novel offering more depth and complexity.

Cons

The version I tried out didn’t offer much in terms of content.
There are a couple of translation problems that will hopefully be addressed as the development progresses.
